Solving the problem of measuring liquid levels in wells complicated by foaming

Location: Mangistau region

The deposit: 2 oilfields under NDA

Task:

Determining the liquid level in the annular space of wells where it is impossible to obtain results using standard echo sounders.

Solution:

Provided high-precision digital echo meter

Result:

In the process of carrying out work using the provided equipment, the following tasks were achieved:

  • We measured the speed of sound of the annular gas, and recorded the liquid level in wells at depths of up to 3 km, which a standard echo sounder could not record.
  • We measured fluid levels in wells with very low pressure. Standard echo sounders also could not return the level.
  • In a well with a complication in the form of foaming, the level was drawn. When recalculating Rzab, the accuracy was 5%,

Results of level testing in wells with low reservoir pressure

Well Casing pressure, bar Liquid level, m
A 0,08 285
B 0,20 711
C 0,09 1272
D 0,08 552

Results of level marking in wells with low liquid levels

Foam, increasing the determined level, introduces a large error when taking measurements with standard echo sounders. It was decided to conduct a test beating of levels with a high-precision ultrasonic echo sounder and check the convergence of the obtained values with the data from the TMS. The following results were obtained:

Well Annular pressure measured from TMS, bar Recalculated annular pressure (determined by echo sounder), m
A 50,3 47,5
B 19,7 18,7
C 21,0 20,6

As a result, high data convergence was obtained.
