Task

At the Arystanovskoye field, the operator had no visibility into production distribution between two producing formations. Without this data, effective ESP optimisation and reservoir management were not possible. The conventional approach used Y-Tool equipment for periodic PLT logging, but this provided only discrete ‘snapshots’, required repeated runs with additional personnel, and incurred high cost per logging operation.

Solution

AB Smart Services deployed the PROBE Multilayer system integrated into the ESP completion of four dual-zone oil wells. Each well was equipped with two PROBE instruments — one installed directly above each producing formation — for a total of eight instruments across the field. Instruments transmitted real-time data via cable to surface and into a cloud-based analytics system for continuous monitoring by the operator’s team. No additional construction or surface modifications were required.

Result

  • Lower zone found to become more active during the accumulation period after ESP shutdown; upper zone contributes immediately on restart
  • Water cut data identified the primary source of oil inflow — lower zone initially producing kill fluid, upper zone producing oil from startup
  • Temperature sensor variability confirmed upper zone as the more actively producing interval
  • ESP operating modes optimised based on zonal data, stabilising production and extending pump run life
  • Client personnel gained real-time visibility into well performance, enabling timely optimisation decisions
  • More than 12 standalone PLT surveys eliminated over the pump run period (6–12 months)
  • Significant OPEX savings compared to conventional Y-Tool approach
  • First deployment of this technology in Kazakhstan
